Get ready for years of delight with this beautiful gentle giant. Digger is a truly unique dog, as he is deaf and yet is still able to communicate beautifully. With a little extra love and effort, treat Digger as you would any other dog and you are guaranteed to have a faithful companion for life.
Digger responds well to hand signals. An extended index finger (point) indicates "Sit" with a closely followed thumbs up and treat once he does so. A gentle stroke along his back when he is not looking at you will let him know you require his attention. A wave from a distance will let him know you want him to come to you.
As he is only just a few months over a year old, Digger is still young and learning new things every day. He would love a new owner who is willing to learn alongside him and practice consistency and compassion. Like most dogs, Digger is highly motivated by treats, especially if they are tasty cheese cubes or roasted chicken. Using these treats will help ensure that your signals and expectations of Digger will become firmly planted in his head.
Though he cannot hear, Digger does love to be spoken too, smiled at, and treated like any normal dog. Your body language, facial expressions and love conveyed during speech can also be used as soundless ways to convey your message.
Digger is excellent on a lead and travels well in the car. He is also perfectly toilet trained. While he may prefer to be the only dog in the family, he gets along excellently with children and would be the perfect friend even for young kids. Because he develops such deep bonds and is devoted to his family, he would prefer a home where people are home more often than not. He also loves being outside and would like to have a large and safe fenced yard to play in.
Once the skills required of a deaf dog and his owners are mastered, life with Digger will absolutely be smooth sailing. Get him out for a good rigorous daily walk, give him a yard with sunny spots to call his own and you will have one contented dog.
